Grandparents

Siblings: Harry Phelps, Margaret, Grace, and Katherine.

He had a self-deprecating sense of humor. A dry wit.

Pop grew up on a farm in Montclair, New Jersey.  He was a teenager when the family lost their farm. His father moved the family to a cold water flat in Brooklyn, New York to start over.

He graduated  from Princeton, got a law degree from NYU, but was not a lawyer at heart.  Travelling west to San Francisco he had hoped to go into business with his brother-in-law.  The San Francisco Earthquake put an end to those dreams when the city burned to the ground.

He moved back to New York to join his father and brother in sales at Bradstreet, Inc.

Pop - Walter Murdoch Howell

Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Mabel was an only child.  This picture was taken after her high school graduation.  She completed one year at Smith Ccllege. I don't know much else about her childhood and family life, but do have a picture of her Grandmother Waugh.

Mabel had a close friend Katherine, who happened to be Walter's sister. Mabel was visiting Katherine in San Francisco, and lived through the earthquake as well.

Nana - Mabel Waugh Sanders Howell

Papa -Luther Grant Blue

Luther Grant Blue, my mother's father,  grew up in north Florida and  was working for a bank when the market crashed. When the bank failed and he was out of work, he decided to join the Merchant Marine. He packed up his wife, my mother and Aunt Jackie and drove down to Miami where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Interesting Fact:  He managed concessions for the race tracks, so Mom and Aunt J. got to travel to Saratoga and watch the races.

Mama - Addie Lee Blue

We called Addie "Mama."  She was raised by one of her sisters as she was orphaned at the age of 15.  Her sister, Bert, was renting out apartments on 8th Street, Miami, when Papa moved the family down.

Interesting Fact:  Addie Lee won a Model T Ford in a popularity contest in Perry, Florida.  It was the first car ever in that little community.

Pretty serious folks based on appearances.  Life was hard.

These were Luther's parents.  I have no information about them.
